Patterns:
Inside the
Design
Library
Every season,
designers
of all types—fashion, home
goods, textiles—seek
inspiration to bring their
collections to life by turning
to the Design Library, the
world’s largest archive of
surface design. Peek inside
this archive with Peter
Koepke’s new book, available
October 3 from Phaidon,
an insider’s guide to the
visuals that have influenced
legendary figures like Calvin
Klein and Oscar de la Renta.
The Neon
Demon
Known for his
stylish crime
feature Drive,
Danish-born
filmmaker Nicolas Winding
Refn peppers his ethereal
aesthetic with bold visuals,
extreme colours and an
electropop soundtrack in the
surrealist horror film The
Neon Demon, where aspiring
model Jesse (Elle Fanning)
discovers the frightening
extent of society’s fixation
on beauty. Nominated for
Cannes’ Palme d’Or, the film
continues its international
releases this season.
The
Silhouette:
From the
18th Century
to the
Present Day
An obsession with moulding
the human form—with corsets,
creams and more—has shaped
centuries of style. A new book
from Bloomsbury Visual Arts,
available September 22,
traces the history of the
silhouette from 18th-century
portraits to the crinoline to a
Dior skirt. Georges Vigarello
uses more than 120 images to
reveal how contour has been
used to communicate status,
sexuality and “perfection.”
Apple Music
Fashion
Fashion, music
and tech
converge with
the new Apple
Music Fashion channel,
offering curated playlists from
icons like Vogue, Burberry and
Alexander Wang. Other brands
will add playlists regularly,
focusing on the music that
inspires them. Apple Music also
is partnering with British luxury
fashion website Farfetch
on a channel that includes
“Songs From the Shoot,”
playlists based on the music
that sets the tone at Farfetch
fashion shoots.
