British-born, New York–based
writer Mark Ellwood (“Lasting
Luxury,” page 118) has lived out
of a suitcase for most of his adult
life. He writes about luxury for
T: The New York Times Style
Magazine, Travel + Leisure and
Condé Nast Traveler, where he
is a contributing editor. He has
interviewed one of the world’s
oldest supermodels, trekked to
a $10 billion art island in Japan
that looked like a Bond villain’s
lair (he brought his own white
cat), and spent a weekend in an
all-psychic town (yes, they knew
he was coming, because he called
ahead). Ellwood is the author of
Bargain Fever: How to Shop in a
Discounted World, which explores
the snowballing obsession with
deals and discounts, from Prada
to Primark.

Bettina Lewin
Photographer
Hamburg, Germany
Germany native Bettina Lewin
(“New York, New York,” page
100) has known since the age
of 9 that she wanted to become
a photographer. She moved to
Barcelona to pursue her dream,
landing a job as a photographer
for independent magazine V.O.
She produced a campaign for a
Spanish fashion chain using just
four rolls of film and one camera
lens, nearly giving the art director
a nervous breakdown—and the
campaign was a huge success.
After working for 12 years as
a beauty editor, Lewin returned
to photography full time. Clients
include Anthropologie, BHLDN
and Bulova, and her work has
appeared in publications such
as Porter magazine, Town &
Country, Elle and Fresh.
Raised in Brooklyn, New York,
fashion activist and model agent
Bethann Hardison (“The
Colours of Fashion,” page 90)
broke barriers in 1984 when she
created her own modelling
agency, Bethann Management.
Focused on diversifying the
fashion industry, she launched
the Diversity Coalition in 2013
to advocate for inclusivity on the
runway. She has made appearances in Vogue and Essence
magazines and was named
editor-at-large for Vogue Italia
in 2008. Her contributions to
modelling and advocacy have
earned her many awards,
including the Frederick Douglass
Award and Council of Fashion
Designers of America award for
her work in promoting diversity
in fashion.
